Athlete History
At only 18, Rebecca has been carving up the
competition scene for the past three years and
has won just about every major junior event
including the 2002 ASP Australian Junior Championship
Circuit. This prestigious event series is a
stepping-stone to the World Championship Tour
(WCT) and a showcase of the best junior surfers
in the world.
Rebecca
entered the competitive arena in 1999. For her
maiden year Rebecca achieved some fantastic
results. She placed first in the U/16 NSW State
Junior titles and was selected to represent
N.S.W at the Quicksilver national Grommet Titles
at Bells Beach where she blitzed the field to
win.
In 2000 Rebecca was introduced
to the Billabong Junior Series. In her first
junior series event at her home-town Avoca,
Rebecca surfed brilliantly to make the final
and eventually come fourth. From then on in
she was recognised by her peers and the industry
as a serious threat and one with a prosperous
surfing future.
2001 was Rebecca’s first
full year competing on the Junior Series. She
finished the year in 5th position, an amazing
result by any standards. Rebecca won 2 Pro Junior
events and was consistently placed in final
rounds. Her tremendous achievements have been
well documented by the National Girl surfing
magazines.
In
2002 Rebecca absolutely blitzed the competition.
She won the 2002 ASP Australia Junior Series
and the 2002 World U/18 Grommet Champion in
early July.
Her winning finals performance at the World
Grommet Titles was one of the most impressive
surfing displays in junior girls history when
she scored a perfect 10 point ride, combined
with two 8’s for a total points score
of 26 out of a possible 30. She also made the
semi finals at the 4 star WQS event at Turtle
Bay in Hawaii where she took down some of the
biggest names in the sport.
In 2003 Rebecca finished 2nd on the ASP Junior
ratings after an extremely close fought battle
which came down to the last event at Bell Beach,
Victoria. Rebecca also finished in 17th place
on the WQS ratings.
2004 was the year of Rebecca Woods!
She absolutely dominated women's junior surfing
in Australia reclaiming the ASP Australian Junior
Women’s title.
It was on the world stage competing in ASP
WQS events where Rebecca has made her most impressive
mark, especially winning the 5 star WQS Nokia
Pro at Lacanau, France in August. This achievement
underpinned a consistent run of results on that
circuit which has seen Rebecca often defeat
WCT surfers in heats, and had led to her qualifying
for the ’05 WCT as the highest placed
“WCT Rookie”.
Rebecca also featured in Gallaz's new surfing
video AKA: Girl Surfer. She was also featured
in all her sponsors global advertising and communication
packages.
This year Rebecca's main focus is the WCT and
achieving a top 5 rating. She re-signed with
Billabong for another 3 years and gauging from
her past performances Rebecca is destine to
be one of the greats. In Australian Surfing
Life Magazine, October 2002, Layne Beachly,
5 times World Champion describes Rebecca as
a “ground breaker and a dominator of the
future”.
