Athlete History
Phil started surfing at the age
of 5 with his twin brother Anthony. Always competing
against each other, their friendly rivalry has
develop a competitive and extremely focused
nature which drives Phil to improve on a daily
basis, whether it be Surfing, Tennis or golf.
The 23 year-old twin from Tomakin
on the NSW south coast has been gracing the
surfing spotlight since he was 12. After an
incredibly successful junior career Phil chased
World Qualifying Series points determined to
make the elite top 46.
In
2001 he acquired enough results to earn his
place on the 2002 World Championship Tour. After
a relatively slow start to the WCT season with
four 33rd finishes Phil finally found momentum
on the perfect right-handers of J-Bay (SAfr)
to finally make a couple of heats. Next tournament
at Lower Trestles, California, he reached the
quarterfinals. A powerful surfer suited to bigger
waves, he secured another 9th when Mundaka offered
some juice. A final's berth in the 6-Star WQS
event at Portugal provided a further highlight,
and his strong quarterfinal showing at Haleiwa,
Hawaii, ensured re-qualification.
Phil secured his spot in the 2003 WCT after
requalifying through the WQS. This year on the
WCT Phil has stepped it up a notch. In France
for the Quiksilver pro, Phil finished second
to Andy Irons. The following week in the Billabong
Pro at Mundaka, Phil pined Andy back by knocking
him out of the event in the first Round! Phil
finished the event in 9th position.
For the last two events of the season Phil
headed to Hawaii. In the Xbox Gerry Lopez Pipeline
Masters, Phil finished in 3rd position beating
Kelly Slater and helping Andy towards his 2nd
World Title. Phil finished the WCT year in 13th
position. While also in Hawaii Phil and Margo
helped pull an unconscious body border to the
shore. Once on Shore Phil and Margo gave him
CPR but he never regain consciousness.
Phil
started the 2004 WCT season with some good results
but it wasn't until the Billabong Pro in Mundaka
did he let his peers know he was here for business.
In a closely fought final against Luke Egan
phil was narrowly defeated to finish in 2nd
place. On the WQS circuit Phil surfed in 4 finals
for the year to finish the ratings in 2nd position.
In Hawaii this year Phil made his intentions
clear from the start that he was to be a serious
Triple Crown contender when he placed 2nd in
the 6 Star WQS Vans Hawaiian Pro. In the second
event, the 6 Star WQS O’Neill World Cup
of surfing Phil finished in 5th place which
put him in 1st place on the Triple Crown ratings
coming into the last event.
In the final event, the Rip Curl
Pro WCT at Pipeline only 3 surfers could win
the Triple Crown including Sunny Garica, Bruce
Irons and Phil. After a few tense days of competition
all 3 surfers had advanced to the quarter finals.
In his controversial quarter final the judges
failed to recognise a drop-in by Pancho Sullivan
on Phil resulting in Phil finishing in 3rd place.
Sunny and Bruce progressed in the heats through
to the final with Sunny finishing 2nd and Bruce
4th.
Phil’s brilliant performance
in the last 3 events in Hawaii capped of a great
year which saw him finish in 17th position on
the 2004 WCT ratings. The tour now has a well
deserved break before returning to the Gold
Coast on March 1st for the Quiksilver Pro.
In between his grueling WCT and WQS contest
schedule Phil has managed to increase his profile
throughout the global surfing community. He
has featured in the Australian, American, European
and Japanese media and through sponsorship advertising.
All of Phil's sponsor have received increased
exposure from him and are extremely happy with
his performance.
