Athlete History
Jessi’s surfing is high
above the rest. Strength, precision, determination,
competitiveness, style and sportsmanship have
moulded together to form a sculpture of not
just an incredible surfer, but also an incredible
sportswoman. Jessie perfectly depicts the surfie
girl. Her long blonde hair and Hazel Green eyes
are trademarks of her profession and also her
friendly personality that is well-respected
and loved by all.
From
the first time Jessi entered the water, it was
evident that she was to become a successful
professional surfer. Jessie started surfing
at the age of 10 and competed in her first event
at 14 in which she finished 3rd. Jessi was introduced
to the water by her aunty and has since had
what can only be described as an extraordinary
surfing career.
Jessi has been competing for the
past three years and has had outstanding contest
results to back up her outstanding surfing talent.
In 2002 she won the N.S.W school titles and
finished overall 2nd on the prestigious Australian
ASP Junior Circuit. Jesi also dominated the
Rusty Gromfest to win the under 16 division
with powerful and on rail surfing.
This year Jessi has come of age
and has absolutely blitzed her competition.
She finished the Australian junior ratings in
3rd place only 175 points behind the winner.
Jessie went out on a high by winning the last
event of the year the Billabong Pro junior at
Bells Beach. In a display that many saw as breaking
new territory in girls surfing Jessi powered
to victory in the 1.25-meter waves. Jessi scored
a possible 17.75 out of 20 and left the three
other finalists needing a combination of scores
to win. The final placing’s were 1st Jessi
Miley Dyer, 2nd Stephanie Gilmore, 3rd Nicola
Atherton and 4th Sheridan Shields.
After
winning the event Jessi said, “I’m
just so happy. “I’ve always wanted
to win at Bells and I can’t believe I
have done it.” Jessi’s win was made
even more spectacular by the fact she has three
years left in the junior series.
In late August this year Jessi proved to the
surfing world that she is one of the best junior
surfers in the world and won the U/18 Quiksilver
ISA World Junior surfing Championships in Durban,
South Africa.
In similar breaking conditions to her home break,
Jessi dominated the final, pulling off outrageous
re-entries and slashing cutbacks in the steep
bowl of the clean 3-foot left-hander waves.
From the start of the final Jessi made it clear
that she was there to win. Scoring an 8.83 and
a 7.5 Jessi left her opponents needing an incredible
16.34. After the final siren fellow finalist
Amanda Clegg, Tory Titcomb and Stephanie Gilmore
needed a combination of scores to try and overtake
her.
Final placing’s were 1st Jessi Miley Dyer
16.34 (AUS), 2nd Amanda Clegg (Aus) 9.03 3rd
Tory Titcomb (Haw) 5.27 4th Stephanie Gilmore
(Aus) 4.90.
Also chosen to compete for the Australian tag
team event, which is made up of 4 guys and one
girl, Jessi had to surf 4 times on the final
day, displaying a level of maturity and athleticism
only seen in the higher ranks of professional
sports. Amongst her hectic week of competition
Jessi also had to study for her trial HSC that
she sat for the following week.
Jessi finished the 2003 ASP Junior series in
3rd position only 150 points behind the winner.
Her final position is made even more exceptional
due to the fact that she has 3 more years on
the Junior series.
In 2003 Jessi also finished year
12 scoring as amazing 97% in her HSC. She also
has a monthly column in “Chick”
surfing magazine where she comments on contest
and surfing trips. With all Jessi’s commitments
it’s a wonder she has time to compete,
but she does with great ability and is one of
the world’s hottest junior surfers.
In
2004 Jessi had a lot of sponsor commitments
that overlapped with her junior competition
schedule. Due to her commitments Jessi missed
two major junior events which were crucial to
her rating position. However despite her commitments
Jessi still finished the year within the top
5 and also secured a good seed for the 2005
WQS.
In 2005 Jessi has had a fantastic start to
her junior campaign by winning the 2nd event
the Balin Pro Junior. This year she is focusing
on winning the junior series and also qualifying
for the 2006 WCT.
